The Significance of the Grotto

Here then is an ancient Shrine of Mary where the pilgrim touches the beginnings and the spread of the Catholic Church in America; for Mount St. Mary's College and Seminary go back to the beginnings of America.

The story of the Mountain Grotto of Our Lady will continue. In the past. America has richly received from those who went forth from the Grotto,. America will continue to benefit from the fervent prayers and increased faith and hope and love of thousands of pilgrims who came to the holy Grotto at Mount St. Mary's College and Seminary.

If a renewed impetus were needed for love the Grotto it was given September 14, 1975, when Elizabeth Ann Seton, who a century and a half ago sought spiritual refuge in the serenity and peace of the Grotto, of Our Lady, was canonized, becoming America's first native born Saint.
